Choosing a grape vineyard location
The location of your grape vineyard will undoubtedly be the most determing influence in the success of your wine grape growing. Not all grape varieties will
be successully grown at any given site. Certain grape varieties thrive on certain climate and soil conditions. Slopes that face the South extend the growing seaon and North facing slopes tend to shorten the growing season. Factors, and the degree of factors such as sunlight, surrounding flora and fauna, soil, and climate all play a huge
role in the growing of wine grapes. Technology in the winery doesn't ensure great wine. Great wines start with the vineyard.
Sunlight
In order to produce fruit, grape vines need sunlight. Grape vines will certainly grow in shaded areas but sunlight is the catalyst for fruit bearing vines! Shade limits a vine's ability to
formate buds and cause flowering buds to simply drop to the ground.
Flora and fauna
Nearby trees can produce bothersome shade along with a host of other problems. Birds, deer, rodents, rabbits and raccoons all pose a threat to your vines. Nearby trees can also rob soil of needed moisture.
Neighboring trees and woods may contain wild grape vines that have diseases and detrimental insects.
Soil and the lay of the land
Grape vines have extensive root systems reaching more than 30 feet. Grapes desire fairly fertile soil, but soil that drains thoroughly can produce fine grapes.
Climate
Climate is the most important factor when it comes to quality wine gapes and grape vine longevity. Hot and cold climates can adversely affect wine quality. Be sure to select grape varieties that ripen during your growing season. Abstain from growing grape varieties that
produce mature wine grapes during the hot summer months.
